Their latest series of My Passport drives shed some bulk and, a new 5TB version is said to be the thinnest in the industry. But is it worth its asking price Well, lets find out in our review of it.The hard drive now has diagonal ridges running over a half of the surface that doesnt just add visual flair but also helps with gripping the device.
Western Digital 2Tb My Passport Series Of MyThe Windows variant of the drive is available in a dual-tone design in colours of Blue, Black, and Red. But there are no sharp edges or any visible disturbances in the form of screws. Also, did I mention that its pretty compact Yes, the 2TB variant that we tested comes in a 4.2-inch x 3-inch footprint and is only 0.44-inch thick. In terms of weight, it weighs about 120 grams thats almost a third less than most modern-day smartphones. While it wasnt that big of a deal for me, its worth mentioning. If youre looking for an external hard drive thats fast, Id suggest you check out SSDs. Also, the drive works with USB 2.0 but will offer slower readwrite speeds. In the CrystalDiskMark test, the Passport HDD was able to reach 111MBs in and 105MBs scores in read and write tests respectively. Using a USB 2.0 port will give average read and write speeds of 40MBs. The drive remained relatively cool during data transfers and didnt make a lot of noise or vibrations. If you want to use the hard drive interchangeably between Windows and Mac, you can reformat the drive to exFAT or FAT file systems. Western Digital 2Tb My Passport Password Youll NeedAlthough, to set the password youll need to make use of the companion application WD Discovery. Western Digital 2Tb My Passport Software Opener ThatBut the drive comes in with a built-in software opener that allows you to enter passwords on computers that dont have WD Discovery installed too. Currently, the software supports imports from Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook, Instagram and OneDrive. Unfortunately, I couldnt get myself to log in to my Google Drive account as the in-app browser would return with a browser not supported error. Im not sure if this is the case for all Google Drive accounts, or only the ones with two-factor authentication switched on. Notably, the hard drive can also be used to take Time Machine backups for Macs. With the password and 256-bit AES encryption protection, you neednt worry about the data stored on the drive. What makes the HDD even better is the software suite that Western Digital bundles with the hardware. Also, if youre looking for higher transfer speeds, Id suggest you go with an SSD.
